An early summer’s evening,
Sitting on the balcony
Overlooking the lights
Of some big city,
I wondered
Just what love was
Anyway.

The argument
On the freeway,
What bitter words
We said
To each other.
We let the night pass,
Unsettled wrath.
We whiled away the hours
In sleep.

In the morning
We sat on the edge of the bed,
Tried to take back
The bitter words we said
Went to breakfast.

I looked at him
Over my coffee cup.
The years we had
Understood
Each other,
The parts of us
We might never have time
To know.

Even then
I knew
His life was ending.

Soon,
He would be
Dead.
